Acclaim for Waterstone Winery

2011 Cabernet Sauvignon
91 points
"Subtle and fruity with refined tannins and a delicate finish. This is medium-bodied, with polished, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Always among the best value in outstanding, drinkable Napa Valley Cabernet. Drink now."
- James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2014 Download PDF

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon
92 points
"I almost mistook this for an outstanding 2010 Bordeaux, but it's Waterstone, which always offers excellent value for Napa Cab. A juicy and fruity red with plenty of blueberry and vanilla character. Yet it's subtle and reserved. It's full body with a velvety texture and a long, harmonious and succulent finish. Delicious and lively. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling, Tasting Report, February 2014 Download PDF

90 points
"Dark and lush with plum, minerals and toasty oak; leafy, dense, supple with good acid structure; long and balanced. "
- Anthony Dias Blue, The Tasting Panel, December 2013 Download PDF

2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
93 points
"This is amazing value in California Cab. Itís hard to believe. Aromas of fresh herbs with currants and blueberries as well as mint. It's full body with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lots of fruit but not overdone and not over alcoholic. Drink and don't worry."
- James Suckling, Tasting Report, June 2012

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon
92 points
"Lots of freshness in this with spices, ripe berries, currants, and chocolate cake. Full and velvety on the palate, with ripe tannins and a long round finish. Lots going on. Find the wine."
- James Suckling, Tasting Report, February 2011 Download PDF

2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
"An exceptional value for a hillside Cabernet that's balanced with ripe plum, herbal and cedar notes."
- Bon Appétit, February 2011 Download PDF

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
Very Highly Recommended
"Medium to medium-dark ruby; attractive, cedary, plumy, cassis and black cherry fruit aroma with a hint of cocoa; full body; forward, rich, textured, layered, slightly herbaceous, dark currant and ripe berry flavors with notes of green olive and sweet oak; velvety mouthfeel; medium-full to full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Good Value. Very highly recommended."
- California Grapevine, December 2008 - January 2009 Download PDF

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon
89 points
"The rumor surrounding this wine is that it is made from declassified lots of some cult Cabernet producers (one in particular), but since that cannot be proven, I will just comment on the wine. The color is a deep ruby, and the bouquet offers lovely scents of spice box, black currants, and cherries. There is good body, abundant fruit, a nice tactile impression, and a lush, heady finish with no hard edges. Undeniably a very fine value in Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, it will drink well for 3-4 years."
- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

87 points
"Rustic in style, with a dense, murky core of currant, earth, iron, anise and cedary oak flavors. Young and a bit awkward, it nonetheless is concentrated and structured and at this price is hard to beat. Best from 2004 through 2011. 1,829 cases made."
- Wine Spectator

93+ points
"This is a big, lush wine that is full of cherries, chocolate and tobacco. The structure is there and so is the intensity. You can identify the blue-chip pedigree with the first sip, plus this is from the excellent 2001 vintage. At this price, it's a fantastic house wine, wedding wine, everyday wine, but it tastes shockingly similar to many high-end cult wines"
- David Sokolin

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
88 points
"Made in an approachable, drink-me-now style, this Cab flatters with its wealth of blackberries, cherries, currants, licorice and oak. It has rich, luxurious tannins and is full-bodied and dry."
- Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Buying Guide, March 2014 Download PDF

Highly Recommended
"Medium-dark ruby; deep, rich, cassis and blackberry fruit aroma and hints of mint and wet stone; medium-full to full body; rich, textured, red currant and dark cherry flavors with a trace of vanilla and a supple mouthfeel; medium-full to full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Enjoyable to drink now."
- California Grapevine, December 2013 Download PDF

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
94 points
"Smooth and juicy with ripe plum and black raspberry fruit; dense and generous, seamless with lovely balance and expansive length; bright and classic."
- Anthony Dias Blue, Tasting Panel, January - February 2011 Download PDF

91 points
Featured in "Year's Best" issue
"Philip Zorn purchases fruit for this reserve from hillside growers from Oakville and Rutherford (65 percent), the balance coming from Diamond Mountain and Truchard's vineyard in Carneros. The blend produces a wine with intensity and pungent, forest floor scents. The fruit is juicy and rich, the tannins contrasting it's sweetness with the savor of olives and plum skin. Luscious and tense with minerality, this is ready to drink with braised lamb."
- Wine & Spirits, February 2011 Download PDF

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
91 points
"Shows a marked improvement over any Cab Waterstone has produced, a rich, layered wine that should improve in the cellar. Bone dry and thick in tannins, it shows deep flavors of black currants, baker's chocolate and herbs. Decant for a few hours if you're drinking it now, or stash through 2012."
- Wine Enthusiast, Buyers Guide, November 2008 Download PDF

"Medium to medium-dark ruby with brackish edges; attractive, herbal, cedary, dark currant and blackberry fruit aroma with hints of dill and pepper; full body; relatively mature, thick, tarrish, cedary, black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors with notes of tobacco and chocolate; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Highly recommended."
- California Grapevine, June-July 2008

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
90 points
"Harmonious and well-proportioned, especially for the vintage, with well-integrated currant, blackberry and wild berry fruit supported by firm tannins and lively acidity, finishing with a long, detailed aftertaste. Drink now through 2012."
- J.L., Wine Spectator, May 15, 2007 Download PDF

2012 Carneros Chardonnay
"I also want to give a shout-out to a great Chardonnay I recently sampled: the 2012 Waterstone. This wine manages to get the balance of bright concentrated fruit, richness, acidity and oak just right. This wine is absolutely delicious and very well-made."
- Go Local, Steffan Rasch, July 2014 Download PDF

2011 Carneros Chardonnay
93 points
"Waterstone uses selective sourcing of grapes from Napa Valley growers to make its wines. This has a fruit-driven nose of lemon curd, touches of cantaloupe melon and rich butterscotch. It's tangy and fresh, leading to creamier notes, yet retaining real vitality."
- Decanter, August 2013 Download PDF

2008 Carneros Chardonnay
90 points, Best Buy
"Earthy notes add a savory tone to this citrusy chardonnay. Delicate, orange-scented fruit keeps it light and completely dry. For roast salmon."
- Wine & Spirits, December 2010 Download PDF

- J.L., Wine Spectator, June 30, 2009

"A very nice Chardonnay for drinking with grilled salmon or chicken. It’s light and delicate, with pleasant flavors of citrus fruits, pears and vanilla and bracing minerality. Really likeable for its balance."
- Wine Enthusiast Magazine, February 2009 Download PDF

Critics Silver
"Little green; soft low intensity fruit.  Light finish."
- Gerald D. Boyd, Critics Challenge International Wine Competition 2009

"This wine offers a somewhat opulent apricot– and peach-tinged chardonnay aroma with just the right amount of oak and flavors to match. It’s a big wine that somehow avoids the grotesqueries so common to California wines of this mass. I recommend it, especially to those who want their chardonnays big and bold but not out of kilter, a testament to the Carneros microclimate’s possibilities."
- Jon Christensen, The Columbus Dispatch, November 8, 2005 Download PDF

Highly Recommended
"Medium-light yellow; pleasant, floral, nutty, citrus and green apple aroma with hints of vanilla; medium-full to full body; crisp, lemony, nectarine and green apple flavors; firmly structured. Highly recommended."

2005 Carneros Chardonnay

- justwinepoints, April 2007 Download PDF

87 points
"From its properly ripened, fresh-apple aromas to its rounded, oakenriched, fruit-focused flavors, this very clean, well-defined Chardonnay hits all the right varietal marks. It is smooth and slightly oily in feel with a nice note of finishing firmness, and if it wants a bit more concentration to win higher scores yet, it is a friendly and wholly enjoyable offering suited to warm-weather drinking in the upcoming months."
- Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine, April 2007 Download PDF of review

2004 Carneros Chardonnay
"The Waterstone Winery, launched just six years ago, sources grapes from the cool Carneros region of Napa Valley. The 2004 vintage is the winery s second Chardonnay. It s less about oak than it is about the fruit,
which has compelling crisp green apple character."
- Food & Wine, April, 2006 Download PDF

89 points
"Smooth and juicy with depth and lovely richness; balanced, long and stylish. "
-Anthony Dias Blue Reviews, Patterson's Beverage Journal, March 2006 Download PDF

87 points - Good Value
"Bright, mildly blossomy, lemon-like fruit in the aromas sets the tone of this fresh, crisply balanced bottling right from the start, and, while by no means a wiry wine in the mouth, it definitely leans to the citrusy side of
the varietal spectrum. It shows a scant edge of pithy bitterness, but it still makes the cut, and a brief bit of bottle age could bring it all the smoothing it needs."

2007 Merlot Napa Valley

2006 Merlot Napa Valley
88 points

"A very dry, somewhat herbal Merlot, with a brittle, tannic mouthfeel. It has flavors of black cherries, currants and sage. Feels elegant and sophisticated in the mouth, a wine to drink now."
- S.H., Wine Enthusiast Magazine, February 2010

2002 Merlot Napa Valley
"Merlot may have taken a beating in Sideways, but that wouldn't have been the case if Miles had wrapped his lips around a bottle of the 2002 Waterstone Napa Valley Merlot. You won't find a bigger, more complex Merlot for less than 20 bucks and don't overlook Waterstone's equally fine Carneros Chardonnay."

2007 Study in Blue, Napa Valley
93 points
" This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot stands up well against far more expensive Napa Valley cult Cabs. It's softly tannic, rich and decadently delicious in blackberry and cherry pie filling, licorice, chocolate, baking spice and sandalwood flavors. Gorgeous, dry and generous. It's a wine to drink now."
- Wine Enthusiast Buying Guide, November 2011 Download PDF

90 points
"On the nose, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, sweet herbs, green herbs, brandy. On the palate, the fruit is opulent - with the Syrah really coming out strong, along with the black pepper and meat one would expect on a syrah. Strong tannins, nice acidity. A fun wine."
- Terroirist, August 2011 Download PDF

"The 2007 Study in Blue is complex and expressive, yet restrained enough to work well as a quenching summer drink. The wine offers distinctive blueberry and black plum aromas. Mediumbodied and smooth, it slides across the palate with notes of blueberry, black currant, plum and bramble with hints of cedar and black pepper toward the back of the palate. The wine would work well with simple fare, like grilled lamb or pork. For a more elegant meal, try it with pan-seared tuna or duck breast with blueberry sauce."
- Gayot, August 2011 Download PDF

92 points
"A blend of 65% Cabernet, 25% Syrah and 10% Merlot, this is a sumptuous red that evidences the class and complexity that a wine with its price tag should possess. Rich and ripe, with flamboyant flavors, it never seems heavy, but instead delights with a silky texture and long, lingering finish. Simply delicious!"
- Paul Lukacs, Wine Review Online, July 2011 Download PDF

2009 Carneros Pinot Noir

2008 Carneros Pinot Noir
4 Stars, Exceptional
"Brilliant raspberry color. The nose is wonderfully fresh and complex with scents of cherry and plum with accents of earth, clove, allspice, and oak with hints of campfire embers. The palate echoes the nose delivering beautiful contrasting flavors of sweet and tart cherries with hints of tar, oak, vanilla bean, and brown baking spices. Ideally balanced with true Pinot character. Offered at a sensible price as well."

From first taste the palate lets you know itís going to be tough to put down. All the aromatic qualities carry through to the palate in technicolor. A rocking price from a grooving Carneros Pinot. Bargain!"
